According to KIDSAFE QLD, the single biggest cause of death and injury to children in Australia is road accidents where road trauma specifically accounts for 40% of childhood deaths. The major cause of road trauma is the child not wearing a proper restraint or seat belt.
KIDSAFE WA have noted that a correctly fitted child car restraint, appropriate for the child’s size and weight, can reduce the risk of serious injury or death in road crashes by up to 70%.
To combat such a major issue, all participating Tyres & More stores have been qualified to check and/or fit child restraints. After 6 months of offering the service, Danny the Manager of Miles Mechanics Tyres & More in Merrylands shares some of his experiences with customers needing child restraints.
“One lady came into the store for something else and I noticed she had three baby seats in the front all wedged in and just sitting on the front seats with no belts or anything, it was a horror story.”
“There are frightening statistics out there today for deaths and injuries to children when travelling that could have been prevented with a professionally fitted child restraint, what it comes down to, if you don’t have a restraint your risking your child’s life” said Danny.
“It should be something of priority but at the moment it’s still a last minute task for families to arrange. This has been clear with the majority of our child restraint customers being dads, solely because the mum is in hospital having the baby.”
“One bloke had to pick triplets up from the hospital the next day and overnight we had to fit 5 restraints, to move his already existing twin restraints and fit another 3 for the new born babies, it was a rush but we managed to get it all done easily.”
“One lady actually came to the store in labour to fit the baby seat” laughed Danny “there are all kinds of cases and we’re happy to help with them all.”
Tyres & More have also introduced a children’s play area in their stores, which consists of a play-table and chairs, simple toys and some colouring in pads to keep your children occupied, so you can relax, have a cup of coffee and read a magazine while your car is being serviced.
“It takes normally 15 – 20 minutes to fit the restraint device but we have a great air-conditioned showroom where our customers can actually enjoy the wait. We have subscriptions so all our magazines are up to date and with Women’s Weekly, Vogue and Marie Claire for the women and wheels for the men some just don’t want to leave.”
