Each year about 1600 people die on Australian roads and many more are seriously injured. The most alarming part, 95% of road crashes are caused by human error. So this month on May 22, you have a chance to do your bit and save a life.
For one day each year you can make a dramatic difference to frightening road toll statistics by participating in Fatality Free Friday, Australia’s only national community road safety program.
By far the most dangerous days, those which statistically suffer most deaths, are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, the organisers of Fatality Free Friday believe that if drivers consciously think about road safety and safe driving for just one Friday in the year, that day’s toll, statistically about 5.3 deaths, could be reduced to zero.
That’s the aim. Not a single road death in Australia for just one day. One Fatality Free Friday.
The organisers further hope that by making people think about staying alive on the road on Fatality Free Friday each year, they’ll drive safer for the next few days too and reduce the traditionally high weekend fatality rate, let alone improve driver awareness throughout the entire year.
Tyres & More is proud to partner Fatality Free Friday to promote road safety by highlighting vehicle maintenance as well as driver awareness.
To do so, Tyres & More stores nationwide are donating their time on Fatality Free Friday the 22nd of May 2009 to conduct a Free National Safety Check.
The check includes crucial safety items like, tyres, brakes, lights, seat belts and most importantly child restraint fitment.
A recent safety check at a Brisbane Tyres & More store discovered that 38 out of 40 restraints were incorrectly fitted. A daunting community rate when according to KIDSAFE QLD, the single biggest cause of death and injury to children in Australia is road accidents where road trauma specifically accounts for 40% of childhood deaths. Fortunately, it’s not all bad news as KIDSAFE WA have noted that a correctly fitted child car restraint, appropriate for the child’s size and weight, can reduce the risk of serious injury or death in road crashes by up to 70%.
Families everywhere need look no further as Tyres & More is Australia’s largest network of qualified child restraint fitters with all stores boasting training by Mobility Engineering Australia and the Australian Child Restraint Resource Initiative.
Make the right choice for your children and find out if your car is unsafe. On Fatality Free Friday, May 22, get a free safety check at your local Tyres & More store.
In the meantime make sure to take extra care on the roads and do your best to assist safety awareness by taking the Fatality Free Friday Pledge found through www.tyresandmore.com.au. Alternatively, for further information contact 13 MORE for your local Tyres & More store.
