Towing can be fraught with dangers, especially when towing loads
that are too heavy for your vehicle. These days, all modern
vehicles have a rated towing capacity that needs to be reviewed
prior to attaching anything of size. Rules do vary for older
vehicles, but generally you are able to tow up to 1.5 times your
vehicle weight (with no cargo). It's often a good rule to get your
vehicle weighted at the nearest weight station if you are
unsure.
To protect your family, choose a properly designed and tested
towbar from a certified manufacturer. The best towbars meet
Australian Standard: AS4177.
Tips For Safe Towing
- Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer's handbook for the
recommended towing capacity.
- It takes longer to stop when towing. On an open road leave a 60
meter gap between your vehicle and heavy vehicles (trucks and
busses) and other vehicles towing trailers, unless overtaking.
- Towing a caravan or trailer takes skill and concentration.
Learn from a school or an experienced driver before giving it
a go yourself.
- Some vehicle manufacturers apply speed restrictions to their
vehicles when towing under certain circumstances.
- Regularly check and maintain your trailer or caravan.
- Weight distribution affects handling, so ensure you spread the
load as evenly as possible.
- High tech manufacturing with laser cut parts and high quality
powder coat ensures safety and longevity of tow bars.
