Spring is in the air, which means the time is ripe to give your car a makeover! We’ve got five tips to get your car feeling like it’s in top gear after winter.
1. Get Scrubbing!
Months of wind, muddy roads, moulting trees and early morning frosts can take a serious toll on your vehicle’s interior and exterior. Time for an industrious deep clean! Grime will also damage your car’s finish over the long haul, so don’t let it build up.
2. Check Your Engine Oil
Racked up the road trips over winter? Now is the time to check your oil. A good rule of thumb is to consider an oil change every 5,000 - 7,000km.
Make sure your car is parked on level ground and run the engine briefly. With the engine warm, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth. Reinsert the dipstick fully, then remove it and check the oil level. If it needs topping up, refer to your owner’s manual for the correct grade as recommended by the manufacturer.
3. Check In with Your Battery
Winter can be hard on car batteries, particularly if it has been extremely cold. According to the NRMA, temperature plays a large part in battery performance and is one of the key reasons they field over 200,000 callouts a year for flat batteries. Cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside batteries, making them sluggish.

4. Inspect Your Tread
Driving on icy winter roads or over debris can wear your tread down faster, which will heavily impact your grip and safety on the roads.
Check that your tread isn’t worn; legally it’s required to be at least 1.5mm. If it’s gone, you need to get new tyres.
