Wheel & Tyre Packages

Wheel and tyre packages are typically discounted more than individual tyre and retail purchases. Four or five wheels and tyres is a high value purchase, and it gives the Tyres & More salesperson more to work with in terms of discounts while still allowing them to make some money on the deal.

The main reason a car or four-wheel-drive owner buys a wheel and tyre package is to change the wheel diameter or width and fit a different tyre size.

Use our wheel visualiser to pick out the style of wheels you like. Then contact your nearest Tyres & More store for advice on the tyre size and ask for a quote.

In the meantime, here are some wheel and tyre package tips.

Car Wheel and Tyre Packages

If you’re into a car tuning or the car show scene fitting wider and larger diameter wheels with lowered suspension is one of the first modifications to do. Getting it right and keeping it legal takes expert advice.

A conservative wheel and tyre package is where the rims are one inch larger and the tyre size is 20mm wider. The sidewall height or profile will become smaller in order to keep the overall tyre diameter similar to the factory-fitted tyres. This is more about a simple performance and style upgrade.

If you’re really looking to create some style with your car’s rim fitment and stance here are some terms to explain the style you’re after which will help determine the wheel diameter and offset and lowered suspension height.

  • Fender to lip fitment – the objective in this style is to get the lip of the wheel as close to the fender as possible without it touching. This requires expertise and a fair amount of trial fitting. The RX7 above is a great example. It's not necessarily safe or legal though.
  • Flush fitment – a clean look where the tyre sidewall and wheel face fit level or flush with the fenders.
  • Poke – is where wheels and tyres poke out beyond the guard. A small amount of poke provides a track car look. Too much poke looks silly. Like a monster truck.
  • Tuck – is where wheels are recessed inside the fenders. This is part of the style on the front of drag cars and the rear of burnout cars. Too much tuck on other cars can look just plain wrong! You'd get a wheel and tyre package to correct this quickly.

4x4 Wheel and Tyre Packages

A high number of four-wheel drive enthusiasts go for wheel and tyre packages for the following reasons:

  • Style - 4x4 wagons are considered commercial vehicles and often available in white and not much else. To figure out which one is yours in the Bunnings car park it makes sense to personalise it with some stylish wheels, aggressive tyres and enough accessories to pass as a white-collar bushman.
  • Diff clearance – if you’re planning to go offroad you’re likely to come across dirt or sand tracks with deep wheel ruts. When your wheels sink into the ruts the differential can contact the ground and "diff-out" which prevents the car from moving. 50mm larger tyres (the typical legal limit) will create 25mm extra clearance from the ground to the diff. While it doesn’t sound like much, it can improve the capability of a 4x4 substantially.
  • Traction – fitting wider tyres, or even just tyres with a light truck construction usually requires a rim wider than the ones fitted from the factory. Wider tyres offer more tread contact, more traction and more floatation which helps prevent vehicles sinking into soft surfaces.
